[Linux_hpc_swstack] Feature Request: Mellanox Firmware Tools
Hello, I would like to request that latest release of the Mellanox Firmware Tools be included in a future release of Sun(TM) HPC Software, Linux Edition: http://www.mellanox.com/products/management_tools.php I need this software to be able to update Infiniband HCA firmware. An example of the process and why it''s required in my situation is contained in a series of posts I made here: http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5316472&tstart=0 Thanks, -Matthew

[Linux_hpc_swstack] Feature Request: Mellanox Firmware Tools
Dear Matthew, Thanks a lot for your suggestion! Bug 17085 Feature Request: Mellanox Firmware Tools P.S. I understand that Mellanox Firmware Tools set is NOT open source software. We are engaging what would be the best approach to integrate the community requests at the same time still shipping legitimate product. [Linux_hpc_swstack] Feature Request: Mellanox Firmware Tools
Zhiqi, what tools do you think are not open source? As far as I''m aware any tools associated with firmware management for HCA''s are all open source. Looking at that page, all of those tools (or equivalents) are included in standard OFED releases. For example, mstflint is already made available via our REPO (yum install mstflint). I''m not sure what other tools you believe are missing and are needed to perform the firmware burning you need. [Linux_hpc_swstack] Feature Request: Mellanox Firmware Tools
Matthew, I know that you needed tricky techniques to upgrade the firmware for Sun''s PEM HCAs. But, now you can download the latest firmware (2.5.0) for Sun''s OEM HCAs (ConnectX) from the Sun''s download center. See below. https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_SMI-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=Sol-Infiniband-U2-G-F at CDS-CDS_SMI Basically, this tarball contains the Infiniband drivers and tools for Solaris10, but the latest firmware is also included. You can upgrade to the latest version with just this firmware and "flint burn" on the Linux. Thanks Makia for pointing this out! I thought an open source software would state an open source license in its release note or user manual. [Linux_hpc_swstack] Feature Request: Mellanox Firmware Tools
Makia, If Mellanox Firmware Tools that work with the OFED and kernel that Sun is building were installed by default or installable via yum, that would be great. You seem to indicate that they are, but I found that: A. They weren''t installed with the latest ISO installer. B. After installation, there are no Sun-specifc yum repos setup for me to install Sun-specific bits from: # ls -1 /etc/yum.repos.d/ CentOS-Base.repo CentOS-Media.repo How do I install the Sun-generated packages on my machine after installation of Sun HPC Software, Linux Edition? Is it that the installer just failed to put the Sun yum repos in place, and I need to manually add them? If so, what should they be? The same repos used to create the installation ISO? [Linux_hpc_swstack] Feature Request: Mellanox Firmware Tools
As we''re progressing towards a new release, we''re starting to fix a few of these missing artifacts. Please download and install the following RPM: http://dlc.sun.com/linux_hpc/yum/sunhpc/1.0/c5/x86_64/SunHPC/sunhpc-release-1-0.noarch.rpm After doing this, you should be able to do a "yum install mstflint". If that doesn''t work as expected, please let us know. Thank you Makia. After installing the referenced RPM, I have the needed yum repo, can yum install an mstflint that works, and have tested that it works. E.g., # rpm -qa | grep mstflint mstflint-1.2-sunhpc1 # /sbin/lspci -d 15b3: 08:00.0 InfiniBand: Mellanox Technologies MT25418 [ConnectX IB DDR, PCIe 2.0 2.5GT/s] (rev a0) # mstflint -d 08:00.0 q Image type: ConnectX FW Version: 2.5.0 Rom Version: 100001 Device ID: 25418 Chip Revision: A0 Description: Node Port1 Port2 Sys image GUIDs: 0003ba0001005df0 0003ba0001005df1 0003ba0001005df2 0003ba0001005df3 Board ID: (SUN0060000001) VSD: PSID: SUN0060000001 Notes: * This mstflint is different than the stuff in MFT 2.5.0 / OFED 1.3.1. E.g., MFT 2.5.0 has flint instead of mstflint and requires MST with the mst service etc. * There''s no man page for mstflint included in the Sun RPM package. There is one for flint in MFT 2.5.0 and it would be nice to include it with any future updated RPMs (perhaps this will be automatic). -Matthew On Mon, 2008-09-15 at 10:38 -0600, Makia Minich wrote:> As we''re progressing towards a new release, we''re starting to fix a few > of these missing artifacts. > > Please download and install the following RPM: > > http://dlc.sun.com/linux_hpc/yum/sunhpc/1.0/c5/x86_64/SunHPC/sunhpc-release-1-0.noarch.rpm > > After doing this, you should be able to do a "yum install mstflint". [Linux_hpc_swstack] Feature Request: Mellanox Firmware Tools
A colleague pointed an oversight on my part. Although mstflint/flint can burn a firmware image, only mlxburn is capable of burning a firmware image *and* an option ROM. As we we need to burn both of these images to the HCA, the mstflint/flint package is not enough to get it done. Do you have an RPM containing mlxburn available? I think the best thing to do is to provide all of MFT with the next release. I.e., "rpmbuild -tb mft-2.5.0.tgz".
