Ugh. I don't think we should stay with this API. It's just too tricky to use. If we have an API that fails when it can't add descriptors (you can reserve space for the last descriptor) the balloon knows whether it's the first descriptor in a chain and can just use a boolean that tells it whether that is the case. -- MST
