[Libguestfs] [PATCH nbdkit v2 0/4] cache: Implement cache-max-size etc.
These are essentially identical to what was previously posted as patches 6/9 through 9/9 here: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2018-December/msg00145.html except that it has been rebased onto the current git master and retested thoroughly. Rich.

[Libguestfs] [PATCH nbdkit v2 1/4] common/bitmap: Add bitmap_next function and tests.
It's useful to be able to search for the next non-zero entry in a bitmap. This commit adds a ?bitmap_next? function to do that. Because the bitmap is just a uint8_t buffer, using fast string functions we should be able to do this quickly even if the bitmap is sparse. (However the actual implementation is not optimized since that is quite complicated - see to-do comments in common/include/nextnonzero.h). I wasn't confident about the correctness of the code and so this commit also adds some unit tests covering all of the bitmap code. --- common/bitmap/bitmap.h | 6 ++ common/include/iszero.h | 3 + common/include/nextnonzero.h | 59 +++++++++++++ common/bitmap/bitmap.c | 35 ++++++++ common/bitmap/test-bitmap.c | 162 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ .gitignore | 1 + common/bitmap/Makefile.am | 12 +++ common/include/Makefile.am | 1 + 8 files changed, 279 insertions(+) diff --git a/common/bitmap/bitmap.h b/common/bitmap/bitmap.h index f943933..80fd5e4 100644 --- a/common/bitmap/bitmap.h +++ b/common/bitmap/bitmap.h @@ -165,4 +165,10 @@ bitmap_set (const struct bitmap *bm, uint64_t offset, unsigned v) #define bitmap_for(bm, /* uint64_t */ blknum) \ for ((blknum) = 0; (blknum) < (bm)->size * (bm)->ibpb; ++(blknum)) +/* Find the next non-zero block in the bitmap, starting at ?blk?. + * Returns -1 if the bitmap is all zeroes from blk to the end of the + * bitmap. + */ +extern int64_t bitmap_next (const struct bitmap *bm, uint64_t blk); + #endif /* NBDKIT_BITMAP_H */ diff --git a/common/include/iszero.h b/common/include/iszero.h index 1079f3e..7a54f0a 100644 --- a/common/include/iszero.h +++ b/common/include/iszero.h @@ -42,6 +42,9 @@ * The clever approach here was suggested by Eric Blake. [Libguestfs] [PATCH nbdkit v2 4/4] cache: Implement cache-max-size and method of reclaiming space from the cache.
The original plan was to have a background thread doing the reclaim. However that cannot work given the design of filters, because a background thread cannot access the next_ops struct which is only available during requests. Therefore we spread the work over the request threads. Each blk_* function checks whether there is work to do, and if there is will reclaim up to two blocks from the cache (thus ensuring that we always make forward progress, since each blk_* function can only add at most one block to the cache). --- filters/cache/nbdkit-cache-filter.pod | 71 +++++++++++ filters/cache/cache.h | 13 ++ filters/cache/blk.c | 163 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ filters/cache/cache.c | 56 +++++++++ filters/cache/lru.c | 7 +- TODO | 11 +- tests/Makefile.am | 4 +- tests/test-cache-max-size.sh | 96 +++++++++++++++ 8 files changed, 409 insertions(+), 12 deletions(-) diff --git a/filters/cache/nbdkit-cache-filter.pod b/filters/cache/nbdkit-cache-filter.pod index 09dc39f..1280959 100644 --- a/filters/cache/nbdkit-cache-filter.pod +++ b/filters/cache/nbdkit-cache-filter.pod @@ -5,6 +5,9 @@ nbdkit-cache-filter - nbdkit caching filter =head1 SYNOPSIS nbdkit --filter=cache plugin [cache=writeback|writethrough|unsafe] + [cache-max-size=SIZE] + [cache-high-threshold=N] + [cache-low-threshold=N] [cache-on-read=true|false] [plugin-args...] @@ -51,6 +54,14 @@ This is dangerous and can cause data loss, but this may be acceptable if you only use it for testing or with data that you don't care about or can cheaply reconstruct. +=item B<cache-max-size=SIZE> + +=item B<cache-high-threshold=N> + +=item B<cache-low-threshold=N> + +Limit the size of the cache to C<SIZE>.
