LARTC - Nov 2003 - bridging troubles

Hi, I would like to be able to control
the slave devices of a bridge independently
of the bridge interface. For e.g. if I have
eth0 and eth1 in a bridge eth0-eth1, then
I the following doesn''t give an error,
but doesn''t actually work either?

ip link set dev eth0 promisc on

However this does work?

ip link set dev eth0 down

Is this a bug?

Well it does if I want to stop traffic temporarily.

this does stop traffic temporarily, but
has other side affects I don''t want.
