I suggest you to take a look at rrdtool at http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool/ You can use it to store traffic statistics in a round-robin database. But they are integrated in the GUI. However, you can use the GUI only for graphing (you only need 3 script to create the graph).
