Instiki users - Mar 2009 - [Instiki] Instiki 0.16 does not work on Ubuntu 8.10

The error below happens with 0.16.5 and 0.16.3 but not 0.13.

Net/https is a standard Ruby package (required by Rails). It should  
have come with your Ruby installation. I gather that, on some (?)  
Ubuntu installations, you need to install the libopenssl-ruby1.8  
package to get it:
      apt-get install libopenssl-ruby

Thanks, it works now. Instiki 0.16.5 seems really good.

jaques: maybe we do a fallback to http if the libopenssl-ruby is not  
available? so people could still run instiki without https.

do we know if there is only ubuntu with that issues or somebody on  
that list also had issues with debian?

I don''t know which parts of Rails actually use net/https. But there  
are a BUNCH of other dependencies in Rails, on libopenssl, which will  
probably break if it''s not installed.

I haven''t heard any complaints from Debian users, so I assume this is  
just an Ubuntu issue.

This is not the only package that you need to install, in order to run  
Instiki on Ubuntu, so I don''t think adding it to the list of required  
packages is a big deal (and does no harm on Debian, for that matter).

just tried ruby/rails/instiki on debian testing (squeeze)
besides the fact that debian seems to be a bad platform choice to run  
ruby (rubygems cannot be updated with gem''s internal gem update -- 
system command and is on version 1.2, which renders it unusable for  
rails 2.3.2) the same reported issue as on ubuntu just occured:

/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.2/lib/initializer.rb:269:in  
`require_frameworks'': no such file to load -- net/https (RuntimeError)

so the issue affects debian and ubuntu.

apt-get install libopenssl-ruby
also did fix this issue.

I believe

      sudo apt-get install ruby ruby1.8-dev libopenssl-ruby rubygems  
swig libsqlite3-ruby1.8 flex bison

gets you everything you need to install/run itex2MML and Instiki.

In particular, you don''t need a GEM installation of Rails.

On the other hand, to run the upgrade script

     http://golem.ph.utexas.edu/instiki/show/Upgrading

does require rake, which probably does need to be installed via a GEM.

hmm. you are right.
i would love to hear from other debian users if they experienced any  
problems or something similar that was described here. at least it  
does not only affect instiki, but all rails/rubygems software.

While I don''t have a testing (squeeze) machine, I have machines running
stable (lenny) and unstable (sid).  Testing falls somewhere in between,
but it shouldn''t differ very much from stable at the moment because
lenny
was just released a few weeks ago.  I can verify that both machines are
able to run the development version of Instiki with no problems and without
installing anything via rubygems.  Here are the relevant version numbers:

stable:
rails               2.1.0-6
rubygems            1.2.0-3

unstable:
rails               2.2.2-1
rubygems            1.2.0-3

Do you get a copy of rake, without installing via rubygems?

If so, I withdraw the comment about the Instiki upgrade script.

Yes. I forgot to mention it, but Debian has a ''rake'' package
as well.

fyi, that was how i came to error messages:

1. apt-get install ruby-all
2. gem install rails
3. rails mynewproject
4. cd mynewproject
6. ruby script/server
---> error rails needs rubygems >= 1.3.1 to run.

strange thing. i am glad that instiki seems not to be affected. i  
think this is because of the difference of gem rails vs. rails in a  
vendor directory. so this might affect people that run instiki with a  
global rails installation on debian or ubuntu.
