Hi, I''m trying to run Instantrails on a WinXP Pro 2002 SP1 box, everything installs fine, I make the changes to the hostfile no problem, start the SCGI server, which behaves as described. But when I navigate to www.mycookbook.com, it redirects to www.mycookbook.com/recipe/list, and then nothing happens. The browser activity animation continues for awhile (Firefox says "Loading...") and then it eventually stops on a blank page. The Apache log is as follows: 127.0.0.1 - - [25/Jan/2006:09:50:17 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 304 - 127.0.0.1 - - [25/Jan/2006:09:55:17 +0000] "GET /recipe/list HTTP/1.1" 200 - 127.0.0.1 - - [25/Jan/2006:10:00:17 +0000] "GET /recipe/list HTTP/1.1" 200 - There''s nothing in the error log. I don''t think it''s that. Firefox is definitely not using a proxy. I don''t think IE is, but I may be wrong. Also, if it was ignoring the hosts file, wouldn''t it come up with an error? Or in the case of IE, auto-search? Nothing in development log. No production log. I tried to double-check the proxy issue by explicitly setting no proxy for www.mycookbook.com in Firefox. Hi Stephen, How important is it to you to utilize Apache at this point? If your primary interest is in checking out Rails, I recommend leaving Apache til later. Use WEBrick instead. Somewhere along the line this got moved off the list; maybe my fault (I have to remember to change the From address because of who I signed up as). Anyway, as I was saying, it''s not that important to me, was just a bit of fun really, to see if it worked; I have Rails going on my Powerbook which is my Web production machine, the XP box is just the computer at my day job (which is an accountancy position). But if you want me to persevere for the sake of Instantrails I''m happy to. Hi Stephen, First, a note on the IP address WEBrick is reporting. I get exactly the same display. I''m pretty sure it''s not the source of your problem. I believe, but have not tested to verify, that it''s a function of the fact that I''m working on a box that''s a member of a private subnet behind a router. At any rate, I have no problem with Instant Rails / WEBrick (I did have major problems trying to use Apache). The browser finds the app using either http://127.0.0.1:3000 or at http://localhost:3000 (localhost is mapped to that address in the Windows hosts file). More to the point of my response, I''ve just finished an update of Curt''s "Rolling with Ruby on Rails" tutorial that''s specific to Instant Rails. The first bit of it deals with installing, configuring, and verifying the setup. I haven''t timed it but I think it takes about 15 minutes max assuming you''ve still got the original .zip file. If you''re up to it, I''d really like to know if the instruction set works on your configuration. I''ve verified it on my Win2K boxes (SP2 and SP4) but I don''t have an XP box to try it on. I think there''s a good chance that, for a lot of people, Instant Rails will be their first taste of Rails. If there''s a problem with certain configs, I''d like to be able to warn folks rather than have them waste their time and get a bad impression of Rails. Sure would appreciate your help. If you''re willing, let me know and I''ll email you the tutorial offline. Hi Curt, You''re very welcome. Thank you for making the time to put together both the Instant Rails package and the tutorial to begin with. I am happy to add my little contribution. Best regards, Bill ----- Original Message ----- From: Curt Hibbs To: instantrails-users at rubyforge.org Sent: Wednesday, January 25, 2006 10:49 PM Subject: Re: [Instantrails-users] Problems getting started On 1/25/06, Bill Walton <bill.walton at charter.net> wrote: Hi Stephen, First, a note on the IP address WEBrick is reporting. I just want to take this opportunity to thank you again for doing this. This will be a great service to the community as I agree with you whole heartedly that Instant Rails will be the first intro for many people (Instant Rails debuted only 3.5 months ago and there have already been over 22,000 downloads!). Curt If there''s a problem with certain configs, I''d like to be able to warn folks rather than have them waste their time and get a bad impression of Rails. Sure would appreciate your help. If you''re willing, let me know and I''ll email you the tutorial offline. But if you want me to persevere for the sake of Instantrails I''m happy to. > > Stephen > > On Wed, Jan 25, 2006 at 11:44:50AM -0600 Curt Hibbs did speak as follows: > > On 1/25/06, west at stephenwest.net <west at stephenwest.net > wrote: > > > > > > OK, fresh install, same behaviour. > > > > > > One interesting thing: The webRick says "Rails application started on > > > http://0.0.0.0:3000" > > > > > > That''s significant.
