This is silly but I''m pretty happy about it. I took Rad Rails unzipped it, stuffed it into the Instant Rails dir. I started IR, opened up a ruby console, changed to the RR''s dir and executed radrails.exe. Since the console has all the required path information now RadRails will work perfectly with Instant Rails. After that I simply changed the use_ruby.cmd to have the path info for radrails. Ah, yes it''s simply childs play but damn if I am not happy for taking the time to do this. What a nice well rounded Rails dev environment that I can take with me on a USB drive now complete with a full blown IDE. Do I see a bundled Instant Rails / Rad Rails combo in the future??? Hehe...
Sweet! Could your write this up on the Instant Rails wiki and link to it from the FAQ page? (let me know if you need any help). What might make it even better is if IR manager created a simple .cmd file to run RadRails, so that it isn''t necessary to make a console, cd into the folder and run it. The only thing it needs is a PATH environment variable to tell it where ruby is. - -- David Morton Maia Mailguard - http://www.maiamailguard.com Morton Software Design and Consulting - http://www.dgrmm.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFDvAw5SIxC85HZHLMRAmvHAJ9as3dZXO7J/HulHrqoamHNGbKKBQCfXT1U wZU9U4ixFMv6+CUCc66Lp64=PZed -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I edited the use_ruby.cmd file to add radrails to the path and now it''s easy to run it from the ruby console. It would be nice to have a button or menu entry in the IR manager app to start it up. When you start in a ruby console this is done; if we make a button in IR for it, then it needs to set up this environment too. - -- David Morton Maia Mailguard - http://www.maiamailguard.com Morton Software Design and Consulting - http://www.dgrmm.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFDvA6YSIxC85HZHLMRAk7XAJ4jfmg7qwiaHx+Txy2XkHnwFzT9TwCeMBSo qe6A064lp4lrSS1nmWxIWNQ=VxMc -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

These are all good things. For Instant Rails 2.0 we will have a much better user interface in the manager app, and it''d be nice for users to be able to add their own tools (or to enable "plugins" or "addons" to Instant Rails). But for now, its good enough just to tell people how they can simply create their own " radrails.cmd" file, or whatever. Don''t shoot me for asking this but is there really a point in having the manager app a Windows executable? The only problem I see with it is that it makes it difficult for others to help develop it because it ( I may be wrong here ) assumes the person wanting to help develop has Visual Studio? Did I hear talk somewhere about making the manager app a full blown Rails app? Has there been much talk/discussion about this because I can foresee a seriously nice web front end that would be easy for those interested in helping to shape and mature it. What technical challenges would one run into trying to create an Instant Rails that would run on linux? Would it be a matter of just setting up the same sorts of scripts that set the path''s correctly and such? And that''s exactly the plan, to develop a Rails app, capable of running in WEBrick that will serve the same function as the current Windows only manager app. What technical challenges would one run into trying to create an> Instant Rails that would run on linux? Would it be a matter of just > setting up the same sorts of scripts that set the path''s correctly and > such? It''s a bit more involved than that as all of the dependencies, Apache, Mysql, the bindings, etc. have to be built for those systems as well as have all of the scripts ported to allow it to be used in the same manner. But this is exactly the plan, and something I should begin working on very shortly!
