I went ahead and removed the debian packages and downloaded the new sources
and compiled them.
I've installed libao, libogg.
I'm getting the following error when I install libvorbis:
checking for Ogg... no
*** Could not run Ogg test program, checking why...
*** The test program compiled, but did not run. This usually means
*** that the run-time linker is not finding Ogg or finding the wrong
*** version of Ogg. If it is not finding Ogg, you'll need to set your
*** LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable, or edit /etc/ld.so.conf to point
*** to the installed location Also, make sure you have run ldconfig if that
*** is required on your system
***
*** If you have an old version installed, it is best to remove it, although
*** you may also be able to get things to work by modifying LD_LIBRARY_PATH
configure: error: must have Ogg installed!
If I'm understanding right then I install libshout, ices, icecast from the
new sources.
Has anyone ever seen that error?

I installed both icecast-server & icecast-client from stable Debian dist.
My icecast.conf looks to be correct, but when I run the shout client, I get
the following error:
Server error: [ Error - Bad password ]
I've tried to insert the password into the command line, but it doesn't
change anything.

Hi:
It might have something to do with having to be encrypted or something,
icecast 1.x had some of that sort of stuff.
Note that those are ancient packages. Neither Icecast 1.x nor Shout are
officially maintained or supported anymore, and Shout was known to be
particularly buggy. People are encouraged to use Icecast 2.x from
icecast.org, but if you must use Icecast 1.x, you might find Ices 0.4 (also
from icecast.org) to be a better source.
Geoff.
