hello, I like your point here .. it's difficult to make such a comparision, since yacast.fr choosed to stream like that. Why did they choose to stream like that? That's beyond me, since Radio France has a budjet of millions. The point of this comparision was to show why is Radio France doing and paying for something like this? Me, with cheap computers which were had no more value (well, they can't run Windows XP) could be used to do streaming and reliable streaming. This is only possible because of the open source work ... which shows that when creative thought is not stamped out by bureaucratic ineptitude or/and corruption, it can achieve the "impossible". I do feel that Radio France, since it is a public service, does have the duty not to waste money. This was also a point of my "comparision". boink. Hi: You might achieve a fairer comparison if you encoded the vorbis stream at 22khz mono quality -1. You'd get a bitrate around 22-24kbps and it'd be the same audio format as the wma stream. thanks for the idea geoff :) however, I don't want to do that to my listeners. I want to provide them with the best stream the little Pentium 166 mmx can do. thus ... this really isn't just a technical issue here. it's proof here that technology, whatever it may be, also relies on people. We know how well techinally ogg works, but can people really use it yet? for instace, if many radio stations were to stream in ogg, could people use their Real Media Player or Windows Media Player? Do people know how to get Winamp 2.8 (and not Winamp 3) and even install it? the comparision, techinally is not totally in order like the files are on Monty's comparision page. however, Radio France has a budjet of millions and me? I did everything for under 200 euro. And per month? I pay nothing. boink.
