[Gluster-users] Moving a physical disk from one machine to another
Apologies if this is obvious but I?ve searched the documentation and mailing list and can?t see an answer. One of my servers which hosts a gluster brick has died beyond possible saving. The physical disk of the brick itself is good and I?d like not to lose anything. Can I just add it as a brick on another server? Unfortunately, I am not able to host the disk on a machine with the same IP address/host name. I suppose I could just add a new empty disk and then copy the data from the old disk but I?d prefer to do things as easily as possible. Assuming it is a replicated volume, first thing is to remove old brick from your volume. It has been a while since I had to do this, but I think you just do a "gluster remove-brick ". It will probably require a 'force' since the server is gone. You should be able to install the disk in another server (with gluster installed). Then just add that brick to the volume, like you did when setting up the volume. You will again have to force, because the volume will already have a volume signature. After that do a full heal, and wait. It will save a good bit of time that the files are already on the disk. It should add any files that have been changed, and then go on its way. You may want to be sure that any files deleted since the server died don't get put back into the volume. Have had that happen, but don't remember if this was the combination that triggered it, or something else. Ted Miller Indiana, USA
