August is here. And it''s raining. Woop-yay. Anyway, as it is of course the first Tuesday of the month, that means in a dark corner of a traditional ale house in the fine city of Manchester, England, *strange things* will occur. So rare, that historians will discuss at conferences in the future whether the rumours are not all merely folklore and myth: Geeks will socialise. Actually, as nobody has given me a heads-up on attendance, it could just be me sat on my own reading the paper, but hey-ho. At least I tried. Not quite so exciting for the historians, but I might give them something to talk about by attempting awkward conversation with a barmaid. Date: 1st August - TODAY Time: 7:30pm - 9pm Venue: Briton''s Protection, Great Bridgewater Street, Manchester As it''s raining, no beer garden likely, so scoot around looking for us.
Good Luck with your FreeBSD group in England. I started ours in Houston, Texas in March of 1999. I can tell you there were times when I was sitting alone! Some of the Geeks have families and guess what you''ll be second fiddle to them, family comes first! The best meetings we had were when we had speaker. Keep the subject matter interesting and who knows! Now we just maintain a mailing list. (www.houfug.org)Most technology clubs in Munich get a much higher turn out when there''s a tech talk/ presentation associated, & not just the normal monthly drinking. I guess finding speakers wouldn''t be so hard if we organisers were smarter about finding BSD related presentations others have done somewhere in the world, & then identifying someone localy knowledgeable in that area to represent it. It''s an offputting amount of work to prepare a presentation, unpaid. Easier if someone else has prepared it already, nicer feeling if preparing, knowing peple globaly might benefit, not just localy ?. Maybe we should be co-operating more, a central repository or some such. At least BAFUG make their videos fetchable, that''s a start :-) PS for group Berkeley in Munich: http://berklix.org/bim/ -- Julian Stacey. Consultant Unix Net & Sys. We[*] specifically decided it would be: a) Informal b) No presentations c) Not strictly about BSD It''s quite laid back, and turnout really depends on how busy we are. We have had 8-9 people in the past, but the core tends to be about 4 of us who regularly turn up. At some point we might get our act together and do something more formal, but who wants to sit in front of PowerPoint one evening when you''ve been working all day? Having a casual chat with like-minded people just seems to be more attractive. [*] - I bullied Sam Smith into making it this way to be fair. I think he was open to something different to the LUG meets, but I thought it would be better if we went for something that felt more like a 2600 meet without the criminal element. :-)
Does Anyone in the south Fancy meeting up ? I personally live near Brentwood and can easily make it to London .. Any takers ?
