Yes! I used a fresh install, IP config was done
by sysinstall, network connection was okay. The only
thing I changed was adding "link0" to ifconfig_fxp0.
The "defaultrouter" entry exists and was not touched.
(I have done this a lot of times at FreeBSD4 machines)
