Greetings, last week or so, I upgraded my laptop again to 4.9. After a couple days I had to down grade back to 4.8 since it was acting still a bit weird. (That 24 hour crash bug bit me too.) What was really weird was this though: I'm in Gnome2, open a gnome-terminal and SSH into a box (done through a launcher but same thing happens when done by hand). All is well until I exit the SSH session. The window closes as it's supposed to. However, the SSH instance is still running and visible in ps. Since I use SSH heavily (through launchers, one for each server), after about a days worth of work and I had a clean desktop, yet the process list was cluttered with SSH sessions. This never happened with 4.8. Has anyone else noticed that SSH session "hang around" under 4.9? (Straight SSH from BSD, no port stuff). I've had similar issues connecting via SSH to a solaris box. I thought it was related to the job I was running on the Solaris box, but never did find the answer. In my case when I exit from the other box the connection seems to hang. The only way to completely terminate is to kill the ssh process. Hope that helps you troubleshoot - when you find the answer please post. Richard On 2004.01.29 21:16 Frank Knobbe wrote:> Greetings, > > last week or so, I upgraded my laptop again to 4.9. It requires a return (or other key: not tried others) to close the terminated session. Odd. -- Jared Earle, Nightfall Games, jared@23x.net - http://www.23x.net "Watashi-wa shin no SUPORUKU desu"
I only ever see this (from FreeBSD to Solaris) if I have a background job running when I try to log out. I just put this down to the background job having /dev/tty or STDIN or some other shared resource opened on the SSH link.
Dear list && R.Schilling, I had the same issue between macosx and linux. It seems, that a process/ sh is running (in the background ). I my case it happend with the program screen. screen is running on linux. than I logged in from a maxosx to my linux box and reattaching the screen. next I opened a new screen-shell and after all work is done, I detach the screen, log out and went back to my linux box. On that box I have sometimes an idle ssh-connection, which seems to hang. I only realize that issue from time to time. As you asks this list, I have spent some time to understand my hanging ssh-connections. the only way to close the hanging connection was to switch and close the screen-shell, which I opened after the ssh-login. So I believe at most to Gregory Bond, that there is at least one process, which was started and still not stop. What shows the 'w' command ? Do you see the hanging connections with a tty ? than check all processes to this tty. I hope, it helps in any way. This never happened with 4.8.What is the process status at this point? If its Z, its a zombie, and its a bug in gnome-terminal or notwhat in not properly reaping children. Zombies aren't killable so that makes sense. The acid test would be to see if they all go away if you log out of your gnome session. If they aren't zombies, do ps axl and grab the wchan. That will show what they are waiting for. -- Doug White | FreeBSD: The Power to Serve dwhite@gumbysoft.com | www.FreeBSD.org
