I'm just jumping in to this message and apologize if this is already known. FWIW, I've been experiencing the same problem on a RedHat 8.0 / XFree86 4.3 box. - Derek
I have played with it a little more. It seems that I can enter my regular user account if I start gdm from root or if I startx from my account, but the /etc/ttys way of starting it gives the same results. I'm thinking that some binary in XWindows had its permissions elevated above the gdm account? ___________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? -- Une adresse @yahoo.fr gratuite et en fran?ais ! By playing with it a little more, I was able to get GDM to work. I deleted the /usr/X11R6/etc/gdm configuration files for gdm, then did another force portupgrade of gdm. After making the changes adviced in the message from the new portupgrade, it did finally work. ___________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? -- Une adresse @yahoo.fr gratuite et en fran?ais !
