FreeBSD System Administrator (FTE, US-only, Work from Home)
BACKGROUND GridFury is a cloud computing service provider based on FreeBSD started in 2007. We have an immediate need for a full-time FreeBSD system administrator. (Linux is NOT an acceptable substitute.) This position is an excellent opportunity for someone with a desire to contribute to the FreeBSD project. Position goals include proposing and following through on a one-day-a-week side project that is related to your work for us but also directly benefits FreeBSD. Examples would include direct development of FreeBSD features (kernel or userland) or adoption of ports relevant to us. Our hiring goal is to attract and retain the smartest, most skilled people by giving them as much freedom and control over their own lives as possible in exchange for the very best work they can give us. To be successful in this environment requires not only excellent technical skills and innate brilliance, but also the rock-solid self discipline and unyielding work ethic necessary to manage that much independence successfully. THE POSITION - Keep roughly 100 nodes secure, up to date, and running exceptionally well - Implement automation as appropriate to keep the workload steady as the number of nodes goes up - Participate in 24x7 on-call rotation (one week per month) - Work with vendors and customers as necessary to troubleshoot complex network issues - Provide "Tier 3" support or customized expert help to our customers - Maintain and enhance critical systems like backups, monitoring, configuration management - Maintain a private wiki with accurate information about how everything is set up and works - The ever-present "other duties as assigned." :-) As this is a system administration position, adherence to the SAGE System Administrators' Code of Ethics will be expected at all times, with particular emphasis on protecting our customers' confidentiality. QUALIFICATIONS (Note: When considering the below, mentally attempt to add "FreeBSD-specific" or "on FreeBSD" to each line. This is a FreeBSD sysadmin position, so it belongs everywhere it makes sense, it just gets redundant to keep saying it. Example: practical experience with IPv6 is good, but practical experience with IPv6 on FreeBSD is better.) Required: - 5+ years of high-level experience ("I play around with it at home in a VM" isn't really what we have in mind.) - 5+ years of professional experience managing production systems - Excellent networking knowledge (LAN switching, VLANs, IPv4 routing) - Expertise in: NFS, ZFS, performance tuning, kernel optimization, jails, pf, carp, ports - Expertise maintaining builds of at least several of: Apache, PHP, Postfix, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Asterisk, Squid, Dovecot, Varnish - Outstanding ability to work unsupervised, to set, track, and meet your own tactical day-to-day goals - Ability to work remotely as part of a team using tools like Jabber, Basecamp, etc. - Excellent English writing skills (for both documentation and customer interaction) Desirable: - VMware vSphere and/or Xen - Practical experience with IPv6 - Kernel development experience (related to subsystems we use) - Device driver development (network or block storage devices) - MySQL/PostgreSQL DBA experience - PHP software development experience - Asterisk development experience - OpenSolaris/Nexenta/Illumos experience a plus - A verifiable track record of past open source contributions - Successful past work-at-home experience - Experience with DDOS defense and mitigation BENEFITS - 100% work at home - flexible schedule - 6 weeks (30 days) PTO per year: choose your own holidays, get sick, and still go on real vacation(s) Note this position currently does NOT include health insurance (yet) and despite being work-at-home is only open to people over 18 and legally able to work in the United States. Relocation is not required and relocation assistance is not available. HOW TO APPLY Send your resume, and salary requirements to jobs@gridfury.com. Please include something in your email to demonstrate both your sense of humor. Depending on your experience, it may be helpful to include a cover letter detailing how your experience meets our requirements. Also, please give us an overview of what sorts of things you would propose to work on for your one-day-a-week FreeBSD contribution. This position entails extensive interaction with confidential customer information and requires a massive amount of trust in the selected individual.
