Fontconfig - Nov 2005 - compiling fcpackage 2.1 ( Xft1,Xrender )

http://fontconfig.org has instructions at the bottom of the page, you use 
xmkmf -a to build Xft1 and Xrender

Hello,

I have downloaded fcpackage_2.1 . Opening it with tar and gunzip I have 
got 4 subdirectories:
  Xft  Xft1  Xrender  fontconfig

in Xft1 and Xrender I have found C-source-files but neither a configure 
nor a Makefile.

How should I compile these packages? I did not find a documentation 
therefore.
