Somehow you''re using Freetype1 headers instead of Freetype2 headers. 
You
may need to pass additional options to ./configure to set where Freetype2 
headers have been installed.  ./configure -help should show you what those 
are.

I tried to compile Xft. For that I loaded fcpackage.2_1.tar.gz.

As a first step I made ./configure as usual.
Then I typed in "make".

Then I get the following log:
