Fontconfig - Nov 2005 - why fontconfig

Hi,

i know nothing about fonts so please dont kill me for this probably 
stupid question:

why fontconfig, there are entries to the fonts in my xorg.conf file and 
i choose the name/size/params for my fonts every time i choose one?
