Hi, I noticed a comment about the stability of Xen running Windows with hardware based virtualization. Is it stable enough for production use? how stable is it? Thanks. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

[Xen-users] howto change the cdrom in a windows guest
Hi, I have a Windows guest system over a XEN machine At this moment, every time that I need to put a cd into the cdrom unit, I need to shutdown/start the virtual machine, for the new cdrom content appears. Is that correct? Or anybody knows a different way to do this? The cdrom part, of the hvm file is: disk = [ ''phy:/dev/XenVol/vmwin12Root,ioemu:hda,w'', ''phy:/dev/cdrom,hdc:cdrom,r'' , ''phy:/dev/XenVol/vmwin12Data,ioemu:hdb,w'' ] Regards Luis _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Hello, I have recently used SUSE10.1+Xen+WindowsXP(no Service Packs)+IntelVT(Core Duo 2.0GHz). It took : 30 minutes from start Setup CD to complete. 30 minutes from start SP2 installation disk to patch SP2 complete. 20 minutes to complete windows update. Virtualized network and CD-ROM drive are available. SXGA display window has been realized by Intel 945G onboard graphic. I could use GIMP to take screenshot and a text editor to write some documents. And I have never seen XP crash yet. That''s some of my experience to use virtualized Windows by Xen. Sorry it''s quite ambiguous, without any evident data. But I could say using virtualized Windows is much better than I had expected. If not, could you think of writing one with screen shots included? Such a practical howto and getting started is just what most of the many current "dual-boot users" need to be able to startup with Xen for running Linux+Windows. I think many average Linux/Windows users (included myself) are very interested to try out Xen just for this Linux+Windows installation and setup on their desktop or workstation. But they don''t know how to start and how to do it, and I haven''t seen a practical Howto for it yet. Also most of potential average users neither understand much of the discussion and technical terms on this list on beforehand; though it may be useful for them in the next phase having a working installation and setup to relate it to. Yes, I often give a contribution to openSUSE wiki, so I would report about it there soon. I''m currently running openSUSE 10.1 (and 10.2 alpha4) and WinXP in multiboot on a Dell Xeon based workstation, and I will therefore be curious to read your openSUSE wiki howto. If possible start to show how to verify with the Xen CD that the hardware is VT enabled. Hope that you also post a link on this list as a reminder to the wiki when it''s ready. Terje J. If you open Yast, and go to the "System" then "Virtual Machine Management (Xen)" it will take you through the process of installing a guest. For Windows, you will want to select "Full Virtualization." To see if full virtualization is supported, do an "xm dmesg" and grep according to processor: AMD: Look for "SVM" Intel: Look for "VMX" (I think. The only indication on my core 2 duo is "VMXMON is done") I have had WinXP running on both AMD and Intel processors. -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

If so, you need to recompile your dom0 to use pae (when you compile, put pae=y on the command-line). All of the FC6 paravirt kernels are PAE, and these need to match. Chris Lalancette

Re: [Fedora-xen] xenguest-install.py - Error Bad file descriptor in FC6 Test2 DomU and Dom0
Thanks a bunch. I see the ERROR in log as "PAE kernel on non PAE host" So I should do "make world pae=y" and "make install" ?? But I ran into serious issues with the 10.2 alpha4 itself, first the chaotic USB mouse bug making the installation difficult with the keyboard only. Afterwards, the mouse problem was possile to fix on i386 using a suggested work-around, but it didn''t help on my x86_64 Xeon machine. I even re-installed 10.2a4 with a PS/2 mouse instead, but the Gnome panel and Nautilus crashed the whole time after login. Neither any "other application" would launch from the Gnome menu, although 10.2a4 worked better using KDE. All in all I found 10.2 alpha4 quite unusable to go further with yet. Therefore I''ve decided to wait on the first 10.2 beta and in the meantime go back to 10.1 again. Rgds, Terje J. I had trouble with HVM on 10.1. I filed reports at Novell''s bugzilla, but I don''t think the specific issues I had were fixed for that version. 10.2alpha4 uses Xen unstable, which is actually very stable. Alpha5 will be released on October 5, so you could try that, or you could do what I did on one of my servers: Install 10.1 and install the kernel-* and xen-* packages from factory. You can get the factory packages from ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/suse -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This e-mail is CONFIDENTIAL and contains information intended only for the person(s) named. What I really had hoped, was that there should be available suggestions which packages to download and upgrade from the SL-OSS-factory to fix the most serious bugs discovered on released 10.2 alpha (and next beta) iso''s. Hi, everyone> For HVM, I''d recommend 10.2.alpha4.Yes, I completely agree! I''m looking forward to 10.2 being released. So I would need no more to write a complicated hvm file... By the way, I made some report on "Is virtualized Windows really usable in practice?" topic. http://cropcrusher.web.infoseek.co.jp/shufuden/winxen/index.html I did not uploaded this report directly (making a link, though) on openSUSE wiki because it''s not so directly related to SUSE itself. The above document itself was created using Openoffice.org 2.0 on Windows VM. I spent 3 hours for it but most of times were killed with thinking up English sentence, not by performance problems of Windows VM.
