[Fedora-directory-users] Focus of this mailinglist?
Hi all,
I''m very, very to read about fedora (and Redhat) ldap server. It is
just
great and I interpret it as a sign, that Redhat (and probably fedora)
are to support central identity-management (and hopefully
configuration-management) using LDAP. That''s something I''ve
been missing
for quite some time.....
However, personally I''m more interested in USING LDAP than in
developing
a LDAP-server. Wouldn''t dare to touch it''s code. ;-)
So I''m someone to ask questions like "how can I make fedora to
query
LDAP for printers which the given computer might use and push this
information to cups" or "can I store in LDAP that a certain group of
computers (running fedora-linux) should only allor lgoins from 8 a.m. to
8 p.m. but should deny login during the night" etc.
Asking such questions on openldap-mailinglists would not be desired....
Would such questions be on-topic here? Or where would my ideas and
questions be welcome? What''s the intended focus of this mailinglist?

Patrick.

I don''t have any quick answers to your questions. There''s some support in the nss_ldap module for some of the things that you need, but I''m not an expert in this area. On the server side I don''t know what we have in place. OK, maybe this post is actually devoid of any information making it completely worthless. But! Our long term goals include making it very easy to do what you''re suggesting. --Chris Patrick von der Hagen wrote:> Hi all, > > I''m very, very to read about fedora (and Redhat) ldap server. They are rather anal about the mention of any other LDAP software on the OpenLDAP list. I, for one, hope that the administrators of this list will not create that type of atmosphere here. For example, if somebody wants to ask how the replication mechanism works in OL compared to fedora-ds, then I''m happy to answer those type of questions. -- mike

Our higher order goal is to solve problems using open source LDAP-based tools. Which tool you use is less important to us than the fact that you''re using one at all. --Chris

I don''t really care about the answers. ;-) Well, at least not now. The point is, wheter I''m allowed to ask such questions here and you did not answer "bugger off". That''s positive. :-) IMHO Linux (or, in this special case, Fedora/Redhat) can benefit from integrating LDAP and I''m searching for a place to ask questions about that. The way I interpret your answer and the one of Mike, there seem to be people here who acknowledge that those questions have to be asked somewhere and don''t object to being asked those questions on this mailinglist. Perhaps we will see in several weeks (or month) that such questions might not be on-topic here after all, so I might have to move on or we might have start a new mailinglist "how fedora might use LDAP". Well, this is just a beginning, but I feel optimistic about it. :-) > OK, maybe this post is actually devoid of any information making it completely worthless. But! It''s certainly not off-topic. We would love to see these discussions happen here. --Chris Patrick von der Hagen wrote:> Christopher Blizzard wrote: > > > I don''t have any quick answers to your questions.
