Yes, there are such plans.  Would you mind sending this to the public

Hi Paul,

There are indeed plans, and I''m workin on generating this package at
this
very moment. The package will install the compiler and linker components
of DTrace (note, not the instrumentation parts) which will let you compile
USDT providers on Solaris 8 or 9.

We''ll send out an announcement to this list when it becomes available.

I think there may be a miscommunication -- there won''t be any providers
made available, but you will be able to generate providers for use on
Solaris 10 and later.

I should have read Paul''s message more carefully before jumping in. 
Now, I just need to work harder to move all our machines to Solaris10

build some products on those ...)

Sorry for not following up on this... in 3 years. We investigated, but came
to the conclusion that it would be very difficult to maintain given the
approach we had pursued. Having a USDT compilation environment on earlier
release would certainly be useful, but it has become a lower priority for the
DTrace team.
