[BUG] btrfs is tearing down whole kernel when disk is disconnected
Hi everyone, (please Cc) kernel 3.0.0-rc4 (latest git) btrfs on an external USB drive repeatingly tears down the whole kernel due to write problems. Is that supposed to be? It always happens when my external disk disconnects, out of whatever reason (bad HW, bad cable, whatever?). THe sequence is alwayss: - disconnect usb 2-3: USB disconnect, device number 4 - reconnect: usb 2-3: new high speed USB device number 5 using ehci_hcd - kernel wonders about lost writing: lost page write due to I/O error on sdb1 - btrfs errors out: btrfs: 1 errors while writing supers and from here on more or less everything stucks. I see that a disconnecting drive during copying is not nice, but btrfs should not kill the rest of the world due to that, esp since it is an external drive. RE: [BUG] btrfs is tearing down whole kernel when disk is disconnected
We met this situation in meego too: https://bugs.meego.com/show_bug.cgi?id=18156 There''s quite a lot BUG_ON in the code path of sync or umount. If you unplug a usb or sd card before umount or immediately after umount, you will hit problem like this. I am now working on a patch to handle this kind of IO problem more gracefully (at least for sync/umount) by using the error handling API (btrfs_std_error). So far, I am still debugging my patch. Will send it to mailing list for review later. Should be finished in 1 or 2 weeks. Thanks!> -----Original Message----- > From: linux-btrfs-owner@vger.kernel.org [mailto:linux-btrfs- > owner@vger.kernel.org] On Behalf Of Norbert Preining > Sent: Monday, June 27, 2011 9:41 AM > To: linux-kernel@vger.kernel.org; linux-btrfs@vger.kernel.org > Subject: [BUG] btrfs is tearing down whole kernel when disk is > disconnected > > Hi everyone, > > (please Cc) > > kernel 3.0.0-rc4 (latest git) > > btrfs on an external USB drive repeatingly tears down the whole > kernel due to write problems.
