Generally speaking it is very well possible. For a quick start, you might want to try an asterisk-centric distribution that makes starting with Linux and Asterisk quite a bit easier than e.g. LFS, Debian, or Gentoo might. Anselm

I run CentOS with Asterisk on a bunch of DL380's. You can use an "all-in-one" distribution like Trixbox, but I find that it installs a bunch of cruft I never use. I started with Trixbox (actually a at h) but found that it was faster for me to start with a minimal CentOS system and build up instead of starting with Trixbox and tear down. The distros is: ? Novell SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server ? Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) You can use CentOS.org instead of RHEL. And as an advice, ask your reseller or google for it before asking, this info is easily found! /Mats

CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendors redistribution policy and aims to be 100% binary compatible. (CentOS mainly changes packages to remove upstream vendor branding and artwork.) CentOS is free.
Gres, Me, as an asterisk and linux newbie installed redhat 4 (without the gui) on a Proliant HP server with 3 digium cards, had no problems with the installation and it is running without problems for 18+ months now. You shouldn't have any problems provided that your linux distro has all the prerequisite packages mentioned on the asterisk guides, if not you will have to install them prior to the asterisk install. If you are using PCI cards with your asterisk, don't forget to check that the voltage of the cards matches the voltage on the motherboard.
