[Asterisk-Users] Best $300 VoIP phone for asterisk?
Polycom 601, hands down. - Brad -----Original Message----- From: asterisk-users-bounces@lists.digium.com [mailto:asterisk-users-bounces@lists.digium.com] On Behalf Of Warren Sent: Thursday, June 15, 2006 10:05 AM To: Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion Subject: [Asterisk-Users] Best $300 VoIP phone for asterisk? If you had approx $300 per phone as a budget and needed to buy 30 phones for a new system, which would you get? Things needed: At least 2 "lines" mini-switch to go to the PC as there is only 1 network connection per physical station Screen to be able to show callerid info and a few lines afterward of data if there is a phone number match in our database (eventually with custom programming) Good sound Thanks in advance, W _______________________________________________ --Bandwidth and Colocation provided by Easynews.com -- Asterisk-Users mailing list To UNSUBSCRIBE or update options visit: http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users The contents of this e-mail are intended for the named addressee only. What are the advantages of the 601 over the 501? I do not have PoE here (at least not yet) and do not need the additional lines (except maybe on the attendant's console). Is the 601 better than the 501 or does it just have the ability to handle more lines? The 601 has a better, higher-resolution screen. While that may not be particularly important to some it certainly was to us. Plus, those extra "line" keys need not necessarily be used for additional line appearances/registrations. They are also used for the speeddial assignment. Plus, the 601 can use the expansion module. It was nice that our "attendant console" was the same phone as everyone else so that if we had a failure it was easy to swap since it was not unique. Of course, we also required an 802.3af-compliant phone which obviously steers us toward the 601. I now use standard DECT phones with an ATA and they work perfectly. Two DECT handsets cost less than 50 EURO. The ATA also takes in my landline, so I only have one set of phones for both. -- -Barry Flanagan

If you /must/ have one, the Hitachi WIP3000 or WIP5000 both do the job. AFAIK these are the only phones with a stable WPA implementation, and although they are sensitive to signal before making a call, they are very good at holding on to keep a call going under fairly harsh circumstances. I still would not put my name to a system with a WiFi phone in it if I could help it though. Too much trouble :( Steve
The most interesting to me appears to be the new Nokia E series, which is a GSM cell phone, but includes (supposedly) an SIP client as well as WIFI connectivity. This certainly could be a winner for business travelers. Early reports seem to indicate some kind of crippled NAT traversal, which makes them not so useful. We shall see. Marty
MVox makes a BlueTooth enabled speakerphone that works nicely with softphones, but is not inexpensive.
