asterisk users - Dec 2005 - cannot dial on console on asterisk 1.2

HI:
I ve downloded asterisk 1.2 and when i tried to dial
on console this message appears:
No such command 'dial' (type 'help' for help)

Despite iam not running any audio softwares.

I believe you have to have a sound card.
