asterisk users - Nov 2005 - installing Asterisk from source

Is there a way to install Asterisk from source and not stomp on your 
already existing Asterisk installation?  I don't see a "configure"
script and it looks like it's trying to find stuff in /etc/asterisk and 
in /usr/lib/asterisk and probably other places.

Look in the Makefile for the variables 'INSTALL_PREFIX' and
'PREFIX'
they control where Asterisk is installed.
