I'm sorry, that previous message might have made more sense if it had all the information that I had intended to send. We are having moments of silence in the middle of phone calls. Generally it's not more than a few seconds, but it's still a nuisance. Our IAX providers (we have 2) become unreachable for periods of 5-15 seconds roughly 3 times an hour. It happens to both providers, but not at the same time. Below you'll find a log excerpt (cat messages | grep teliax) with regards to that. I was wondering if the two issues are related. Either way, does any one have any experience with regards to silence in the middle of phone calls? What possible causes should I be looking at. We had the same kind of issue with a VPN to our Calgary office. The VPN was so slow, it was unusable and would periodically drop. Doing a traceroute, we found that the packets would take a stupid route to Calgary, basically they would be backhauled to routers all over North America, when we *knew for a fact* that the target was only a couple of hops away. The solution was some very politely worded emails to my ISP's upstream provider, with relevant traceroutes attached. They modified their routing tables, and thanked us for bringing this routing issue to their attention, as it helped out some other people that were having similar problems (whether they were aware, or didn't care, dunno.) For the record, the upstream provider was Sprint (at the time - who the hell knows these days!). Problem solved. So maybe your first course of action is to get metrics on the problem with traceroute over a period in time. Maybe cron a script to traceroute every 3 min to a log file for a few hours, then analyze the logs and look for high lag times. You should be able to identify a couple of routers that are causing the trouble. Then, armed with your data, you can contact those upstream providers with details and see what they can do for you. The Tier 1 guys are professionals, and they will probably help you out if you ask really nicely. -----Original Message----- From: Adam Moffett [mailto:adam@plexicomm.net] Sent: Friday, November 04, 2005 1:26 PM To: Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion Subject: [Asterisk-Users] Moments of silence - take2 I'm sorry, that previous message might have made more sense if it had all the information that I had intended to send. seems every 10 sec something is happeneing on your network... make sure your router is rebooted often if you have QOS on it has they tend to get behind on queues.. or UDP crc checksum failing in router.. that happened to me on a linksys your ping is ok 60 is good i would also test my lan quality .. or wan.. some providers cut connections every xx seconds to deter peer sharing THE KEY HERE is you said 2 providers.. meaning i higlhy doubt its them.. 1 ok 2 no way.. its on your side.. solution #1 try another router. #2 try to do a line quality test see if its regular interval something is hapepning.. check your mta also.. After alot of hair pulling, it turned out it was my own fault. I went to debug a core dump and instead of typing "gdb", I typed "gdm". It was attempting to do something with X and the Gnome Display Manager and kept failing. It repeatedly tried once every 10 seconds and chewed the processor while it was doing it. Once I killed the process, everything was fine. DOH!!! Mark
I'm not sure if a failed qualify will affect your active call but you might want to try to use the qualifysmoothing variable in iax.conf. This won't "disqualify" a peer for a single bad sample. ;qualify=yes ; Make sure this peer is alive ;qualifysmoothing = yes ; use an average of the last two PONG ; results to reduce falsly detected LAGGED hosts ; Default: Off ;qualifyfreqok = 60000 ; how frequently to ping the peer when ; everything seems to be ok, in milliseconds ;qualifyfreqnotok = 10000 ; how frequently to ping the peer when it's ; either LAGGED or UNAVAILABLE, in milliseconds Adam Moffett wrote:> I'm sorry, that previous message might have made more sense if it had > all the information that I had intended to send. > > We are having moments of silence in the middle of phone calls. > Generally it's not more than a few seconds, but it's still a > nuisance.
