A lot of people here will have opinions of their favorite linux distro but the fact is, there are many very stable distro's. And it depends on your needs. I'd recommend starting here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/96509133/m/7870905925 http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=5 PS: I use Debian because I like the update feature and how the package management deals with dependencies.

The one that you're most comfortable on. I'd venture to say http://www.redhat.com/software/rhel/ Redhat Enterprise Linux.. They offer support to back their software up, but it's not cheap. Centos is built on the RHEL RPMs so it's similar but with no support. Debian/Suse/Fedora are all pretty good for stability too. Stability is not as much of an issue for Linux machines as it is for Windows. I'm not a Linux expert, but its my understanding that stability is determined by the Kernel, which most distributions share. What is more an issue is which distributions support which programs (and how easy it is to get updates). While there are many similiarities, the architecture among different Linux versions is not exactly the same. As a result it might be difficult to get an application designed for one distribution to run on another distribution, even if they run the same kernel. As a result its usually a good idea to go with a common distribution which has the most programs specificially designed for its architecture, and supports easy updates (since these fix security issues). Red Hat/Fedora is the largest, and one of the most used in business applications. Since Red Hat has started charging for their Enterprise products, there have been another of "Clones", that use the free RedHat open source, but have gotten rid of the RedHat Logos. Examples are CentOS, WhiteBoxLinux and TaoLinux. Depending on whether you need support or not, you could go with Red Hat, or one of the clones.> >Subject: [Asterisk-Users] most stable linux to build business > From: wassim darwish <wassimdarwish@yahoo.com> > Date: Thu, 28 Jul 2005 09:47:35 -0700 (PDT) > To: asterisk-users@lists.digium.com > >what is the most stable linux that we can build >business on it, i mean the best linux a linux without >problems . > > >__________________________________________________ >Do You Yahoo!? >Tired of spam? In that case the real question is probably one of which is easiest for you to learn and manage. Most any linux distribution is going to be stable in the hands of someone that knows what they are doing. Two of the easiest to setup and maintain for beginners are probably Centos and Debian. Slackware is very good but it takes more knowledge and time to manage correctly. My personal favorite is debian. In either case don't expect to be able to run a stable system without having at least a year or so of hands on experience. That's just the way it is. Stuff breaks at the worst possible time, always.. And when something 'breaks' versus just having something misconfigured, you will need someone that has a decent amount of experience to fix it. Chris
Definitely RedHat Enterprise Linux ;-) Now, call their sales and ask them all your future questions.> -----Original Message----- > From: wassim darwish [mailto:wassimdarwish@yahoo.com] > Sent: Thursday, July 28, 2005 11:48 AM > To: asterisk-users@lists.digium.com > Subject: [Asterisk-Users] most stable linux to build business > > > what is the most stable linux that we can build > business on it, i mean the best linux a linux without > problems .

I had no problems installing it. It is not the latest which is 9.3. Installing it was just putting a cd in the drive and booting. It recognized everything in my system and everything worked. Bob
