asterisk users - Jul 2005 - Does Asterisk need to know where the call is comming from?

Hi:
 
When a system like cisco is connected to the pstn through an asterisk server,
does it matter for Asterisk what system is making the request as long as the
username, password, and supported protocol are correct? In other words, if the
system is using the right protocol, sip or IAX, and the right authentication, is
there anything else needed by asterisk so it can pass the call?
