asterisk users - Jan 2005 - Asterisk vs Proxy SIP

Hello,

When to incorporate the Asterisk in my VoIP network the Proxy SIP will
be necessary?

The Asterisk can execute the functions of Proxy SIP or the Proxy will
need be present in the network?
