asterisk users - Oct 2004 - Sound Problem with * on VIA mini-itx M10K AC97' VT8235 chipset

I've got Asterisk up and running on a VIA mini-itx M10K with a TDM-400 card
but I'm having a terrible time with the sound setup.  I tried RH9 and Debian
distributions, with 2.4.18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 kernels.  I've used the VIA
drivers, ALSA drivers, OSS drivers and Kernel drivers with varying results.
I can setup the audio to work with a few different applications, 2 channels
and 6 channels with good results depending on the driver (without asterisk
running).  Knoppix even kicks the sound chip in the ass and sounds great.

 

The problem is Asterisk doesn't work well with any of the drivers or kernels
or settings (as far as the sound goes).  I've loaded Asterisk with and
without oss and alsa in modules.conf.  Sometime the sound card is found,
sometimes not.  I've tried Asterisk stable and latest cvs. When the sound
card appears to be working fine and Asterisk loads ok and sees the card,
loads oss_module, the sound through the console is choppy and delayed.  I've
tweaked kernel settings and sound module settings till I can tweak any
longer.  I've read a million post about this and tried many work-a-rounds.
The Asterisk Wiki has a post about installing Asterisk on this motherboard
but no mention of sound.

 

I've experienced AC97' sound chip driver problems in the past with other
motherboards, but always had the room to throw in a cheap sound card to get
* up and running with console working.  This mini-itx case doesn't have the
room for 2 pci cards, so I really need to get the on-board sound working.

 

I fear that this sound chip and asterisk combo are just not compatible.  If
anyone has got this working, please share.  I can send more info if needed.

Are you running in X or using framebuffer? If you're doing either of 
these - tough luck.
