Hey all, #caboose has started a fund to hire someone, or offer a bounty, to work in a dedicated fashion on documentation.. We''ve already raised over $800 in the first hour. (make that $900..) (it''s gone up to $1120 in the time it took to write this email) The post is here: http://blog.caboo.se/articles/2006/08/04/the- caboose-rails-documentation-project And the status page is here: http://blog.caboo.se/pages/ documentation_drive Snip: It seems like all the good writers are off writing Rails books. Unfortunately, the promise of fame and fortune has sucked the talent from the documentation pool, and the ruby on rails docs have fallen by the wayside. The standard response from most coders I spoke to was “sure, I’d love to help, but I’m terribly busy.” So, you’re making a living from rails? You should consider putting up $10, or $50, or whatever, to fund a professional to spend some quality time alone with the API docs. We’re aiming at $5,000 USD. Here’s the paypal button. All the money received at this account will go towards paying one or more people to enhance the Ruby on Rails API docs. If you want some serious props, please attach your name or fire me an email and we’ll publically celebrate everyone’s contribution. Thanks in advance! (Credit cards accepted..) __ If anyone has some incentives, or prizes, or anything to contribute, (*cough* free accounts) please let me know! ________ court3nay http://caboo.se @(o O)@

Perhaps taking a wiki approach would be a better way to target this fundage? I''m thinking about doing this with RubySpec...get the community contributing to the wiki, using the money as "prizes" for the top contributors. I think it''s important that documentation efforts like this involve a larger community, and hiring one person won''t accomplish as much as "encouraging" dozens or hundreds of them. Does that seem reasonable? Either way, perhaps some of you core Rails folks would be interested in the RubySpec effort. Try headius.com/rubyspec, and email me if you have any questions. $13,000 in what, 24 hours? Holy balls, that''s some serious response! Somebody should get another post up on Riding Rails with that sweet number. Would Ruby Central be an approachable funnel? If so, perhaps starting the ball rolling for a RailsCentral (whatever) at the same time would be a good idea. Will it all be rdoc to be added to the core rails distribution? If there are to be separate tutorials/guides, how will they be licensed? I personally believe GFDL or CC-BY-(SA) would benefit the community the most. Alex

My original plan was to just add to the existing API documentation, which is enclosed in the source code, hence, MIT-licensed. You can print it out and sell it as wallpaper, AFAIK. Courtenay
