The problem is that i:i+1 should be i:(i+1)
eg
R> i<-10
R> i:i+1
[1] 11
R> i:(i+1)
[1] 10 11
i:i+1 means (i:i)+1, which reduces to i+1

I don't know what you mean. The examples for sapply() include such an
example, and it works.
