Well, the R-intro manual has a fairly detailed explanation.

That is a guide to a (pre-release) version of version 4 of S: R is similar
to version 3 of S. I think it is likely to be quite misleading to a
beginner, as S4 is so different. In any case, on graphics it essentially
says graphical facilities exist and are described in Venables & Ripley and
Becker, Chambers & Wilks.
