Hello, I am a fairly new user to OpenSolaris and I am asking myself a few questions. The objective of this projet is to replace 3 VMWare servers by 3 Xen servers as my company has not been satisfied with VMWare. Sounds good, doesn''t it ? Has anyone successfully used Convirt to manage an OpenSolaris xVM dom0 ? If not, are there equivalent tools for OpenSolaris ? Thank you for your help and feeback, Antoine Benkemoun

Wow that''s a whole lot of pessimism... opensolaris-discuss list is way more optimistic... I''ve done a little reading through the archive of this mailing list, seems like the OpenSolaris port of Xen isn''t active anymore. That''s one sad thing. But if OpenSolaris port of Xen isn''t active anymore , it means OSOL by-by for FOSS community. --- On Thu, 4/8/10, Antoine Benkemoun <antoine.benkemoun@gmail.com> wrote: From: Antoine Benkemoun <antoine.benkemoun@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [xen-discuss] Convirt and xVM To: "Boris Derzhavets" <bderzhavets@yahoo.com> Cc: xen-discuss@opensolaris.org Date: Thursday, April 8, 2010, 11:34 AM Wow that''s a whole lot of pessimism... opensolaris-discuss list is way more optimistic... Ah thank you for the reassuring news =) I''ll just wait around to see if anyone has gotten Convirt to work on OSol as that still interests me. If you are using this for commercial use, isn''t Oracle VM(OVM) a safer bet? http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/vm/index.html On the oracle virtualization roadshow OVM was described and xVM wasn''t mentioned. That said, I assume that the xVM is community driven, so if Linux can have xen, what should prevent OSOL from having a thriving community? You really really want to have your DomUs live in zvols. However, this needs to be pointed out to Oracle. If no customer explicitly asks for Solaris as a supported Dom0, they will not provide it.> That said, I assume that the xVM is community driven, so if Linux can > have xen, what should prevent OSOL from having a thriving community?Nothing. The problem is that 99% just want to use virtualisation, not develop it. Regards -- Volker -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Volker A. Thank you for your answer. I am not interested in OracleVM, the objective of this setup is to build a platform with maximum flexibility. OpenSolaris/xVM is the ideal combination thanks to Crossbow and ZFS obviously. We are not Sun and/or Oracle customers therefore we are not in a position to make such a suggestion. I was hoping to have my company start doing a little OpenSolaris via the integration of this Xen platform.
