[Xen-devel] xenctl returning exceptions (half of the time!)
I''m currently experimenting with Xen and built the 1.1rc1 snapshot. Everything seems fine, except half of the time I run xenctl I get an exception. At the bottom of this e-mail is a copy of it. I am using j2sdk 1.4.2_02 from Sun''s RPM, RedHat9 with 2.3.2-27.9.7, and of course 2.4.22-xeno kernel. I boot domain 0 with 128MB of memory. Completely off the subject, is there any way to have the virtual disks "allocated as written" instead of allocating all of the space at once. I ask as i''d like to give domains plenty of disk space to grow, but most will never use anywhere near what is allocated. Also, I read the white paper on Xen and am wondering if 1.1 includes any modifications to the disk scheduler as it seems that was a weak spot in the paper. Error: **************** Another exception has been detected while we were handling last error. Dumping information about last error: ERROR REPORT FILE = (N/A) PC = 0x40402f52 SIGNAL = 11 FUNCTION NAME = (N/A) OFFSET = 0xFFFFFFFF LIBRARY NAME = (N/A) Please check ERROR REPORT FILE for further information, if there is any. I thought I read it was Sun''s 1.4. I''m a newbie with Java so if you could tell me a way to get a trace or debugging information it would be very much appreciated. Also, do you have any input on my virtual disk or I/O scheduler questions? Additionally, i''ve gone through the readme''s and the usage doc for xenctl, but I am apparently doing something wrong. [root@vpc root]# xenctl partitions add -p/dev/hdb1 warning: state file not found [/var/lib/xen/vdstate.xml] Partition /dev/hdb1 does not exist. but.. [root@vpc root]# fdisk -l /dev/hdb Disk /dev/hdb: 17.1 GB, 17179803648 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 2088 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdb1 1 2088 16771828+ 83 Linux This is the correct syntax for partitions add correct? I''ve tried setting the partition id to others (ie. 0=Empty). I have been able to format an ext3 fs on it so i''m positive the device is really accessible. Another problem I have is this (taken from xenctl script -f/etc/xen-mynewdom): [root@vpc root]# /install/bin/xi_create 65535 XenoLinux ERROR: Error when executing privileged control ioctl (1 = Operation not permitted) So, in closing.. 1) Are these problems in 1.1rc1 and I should upgrade to the latest BK files? 2) Are these new problems? 3) Am I being clueless and i''ve managed to break a perfectly setup system? ;-)> -- Bin > > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > This SF. Re: [Xen-devel] xenctl returning exceptions (half of the time!)
I took the plunge and re-installed this server with RedHat 9. I no longer receive the Java exception errors. I am having a problem with the domains finding their root device. I''ve tried to specify it everywhere possible. My script consists of: domain new -ntest1 -k16768 -v1 -4192.168.1.51 -g192.168.1.1 -htest1.office.tektonic.net -d/dev/sda2 -tro root=/dev/sda2 -ainit=/linuxrc 4 DOMID=2 physical grant -psda2 -r domain start Everything starts up fine, but it cannot find the root device. Here are some snippets from the console: [18] Kernel command line: ip=192.168.1.51:169.254.1.0:192.168.1.1:255.255.0.0:test1.office.tektonic.net:eth0:off init=/linuxrc root=/dev/sda2 ro ... [18] root_device_name = sda2 [18] VFS: Cannot open root device "sda2" or 08:02 [18] Please append a correct "root=" boot option [18] Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:02 I''ve tried to specify "/dev/sda2" in as many places as possible, however it keeps on trying to load just "sda2". I am using xen-unstable as I am testing under VMware and need the BusLogic SCSI support. I do not use devfs. I was using xen-unstable though as I need the BusLogic SCSI support for VMware. I''ve tried using my test server and Virtual PC and both do not work with 1.1 either. I''m trying to see why Xen reboots on my test server still, i''m betting it''s un-supported hardware. Re: [Xen-devel] xenctl returning exceptions (half of the time!)
I did find something odd that may be causing the problem. [root@xen etc]# xenctl physical grant -psda2 -n5 Granted physical access to domain 5 [root@xen etc]# xenctl physical list -n5 Could not get extent list using: /install/bin/xi_phys_probe 5 I''m not really sure what that means, but I take it it''s possible that on boot it can''t access sda2 because it doesn''t have access. I''m having similar problems to you...I''m thinking there is something subtle going on, and might try your approach of starting with a fresh RedHat 9 system (currently it''s SuSE 9). I''m going to upgrade my JDK from 1.4.1_02 to Sun''s 1.4.2, too. Meanwhile, output looks like this: # xenctl script -f/etc/xen-mynewdom14 Domain defaults: name XenoLinux size 0 vifs 1 domainImage /boot/xenolinux.gz domainInitRD null rootDevice /dev/sdd1 rootArgs null usrDevice null NWIP 137.229.71.14 NWGW 137.229.71.1 NWMask 255.255.255.240 MaxDomainNumber 20 NWNFSServer 169.254.1.0 NWNFSRoot null XIToolsDir /usr/local/bin/ args Failed to build domain using: /usr/local/bin/xi_build 8 /tmp/xen-image-32233.tmp 1 ip=137.229.71.14:169.254.1.0:137.229.71.1:255.255.255.240:grid-14.arsc.edu:eth0:off root=/dev/sdd1 " ("xenctl domain list" says the domain exists, but it''s not running and basically is only good for killing). xen-mynewdom14 contains: domain new -hgrid-14.arsc.edu -t" root=/dev/sdd1 DOMID=14 " physical grant -psdd1 -r domain start (I''ve tried adding other devices, but all of /boot, /usr, /etc and so forth are on /dev/sdd1, with a custom fstab. /dev/sdd1 is not the root for any other domain, and is not mounted by others) xenctl.xml contains: <?xml version="1.0"?> <domctl_defaults> <domain_name>XenoLinux</domain_name> <domain_image>/boot/xenolinux.gz</domain_image> <domain_vifs>1</domain_vifs> <root_device>/dev/sdd1</root_device> <nw_ip>137.229.71.14</nw_ip> <nw_gw>=</nw_gw> <nw_mask>=</nw_mask> <nw_nfs_server>169.254.1.0</nw_nfs_server> <max_domain_number>20</max_domain_number> <xi_tools_dir>/usr/local/bin/</xi_tools_dir> </domctl_defaults> The give and take between xenctl.xml and the script (xen-mynewdom14 in this case) just doesn''t seem to matter. I know it is seeing /boot/xenolinux.gz because in earlier tests it wasn''t. But what is going wrong is a mystery. A working example of booting a virtual domain with a specific IP address from a specific (non-CD) device would be very helpful. I''ll grab the xeno-unstable again after this weekend, in the hopes that the problems are related to the Java program Bin mentioned. -- Greg> My script consists of: > > domain new -ntest1 -k16768 -v1 -4192.168.1.51 -g192.168.1.1 > -htest1.office.tektonic.net -d/dev/sda2 -tro root=/dev/sda2 > -ainit=/linuxrc 4 DOMID=2 > physical grant -psda2 -r > domain start > > Everything starts up fine, but it cannot find the root device. Some things to look for: 1. Does Xen detect your IDE device when it boots (if it''s on some weird extension card then it may not be found). 2. Does Xenolinux see ''hdf'' when it probes for devices. If it does then it should give one of those partition-listing lines: DOM0: Partition check: DOM0: hdf: hdf1 ... I guess you may not be able to confirm 1 if it scrolls too fast, but I expect that the latter partition checks should still be visible onscreen when the boot fails. -- Keir ------------------------------------------------------- This SF. Re: [Xen-devel] xenctl returning exceptions (half of the time!)
Another problem.. :) Seems there is a bug with create vbd''s. I created a virtual disk. I then try to create a vbd and receive an error: [root@xen root]# xenctl vbd create -k2066927224 -v1 -w Could not write VBD details to /proc/xeno/vhd /proc/xeno/vhd does not exist, /proc/xeno does though. Please retry with xeno-unstable ! [ It''s actually not very unstable any more :-) ] -- Keir ------------------------------------------------------- This SF. It may not be fixed: we have imminent plans to implement a much better toolset. For now, booting off a real partition is the only sane way to boot a domain off local disc. -- Keir ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.
