Backgroundrb devel - Mar 2009 - how does backgroundrb allocate memory to a worker?

In the Rails environment, does backgroundrb start a separate process (equal
to a mongrel instance) for each worker?  Is there any optimization possible?

My Rails app is rather large and starting backgroundrb consumes too much
memory for 4 workers.

You can use set_no_auto_load(http://backgroundrb.rubyforge.org/workers/) so
the worker does not startup automatically.
