Did the ZFS gzip compression feature (i.e. "zfs set compression=gzip") make it in to Solaris 10 U4? I was looking forward to being able to use it in a production Solaris release without having to compile my OpenSolaris build, but it doesnt'' seem to be there. Solaris 8/07 seems to be "updated" to support the fourth version only (zpool history). -- julien. http://blog.thilelli.net/
Nope. This feature hasn''t made it to S10U4. We are anticipating it to be available in S10U5. -- Prabahar. I suppose my next question, then, is how difficult would it be for me to apply a patch against U4 to gain the gzip compression functionality in ZFS? I come from a FreeBSD background, so I have no problems with compiling OpenSolaris source, but I would like to retain as much of the code from the production S10U4 as I can for stability reasons. I''m still on b65 [jason:~] jason$ uname -a SunOS jason.joyent.com 5.11 snv_65 i86pc i386 i86pc And gzip is a compression option compression YES YES on | off | lzjb | gzip | gzip-[1-9] Regards, Jason

The ZFS team may be able to give you some guidance about what build of ON most closely corresponds to what''s in Solaris 10 U4, and you could try to work from there.
