LightDM - Feb 2017 - suspected lightdm issue causing greeter crash

Hello,

I am currently a Ubuntu 16.10 user and recently made the fatal mistake
of rebooting my machine to have new updates take effect. I am unable to
use my machine graphically because when lightdm starts up any greeter I
attempt to use crashes causing an endless loop of lightdm restarts.
Prior to that my uptime had been since early January so there have been
quite a few updates installed since then. I have been attempting to
troubleshoot the issue but I am just not familiar enough with the
display manager / greeter processs to know if I'm looking in the right
areas. I am hoping that someone can nudge me in the right direction to
get me working again. I've opened a bug [1] but haven't heard anything
back but I am doing my best to track things I find on there.
