[R-sig-Debian] R Graphics engine again - Was: Accepted r-base 4.1.3.20220324-1 (source) into unstable
Dear all, For the upcoming R 4.2.0, there is a NEWS entry: - The graphics engine version, R_GE_version, has been bumped to 15 and so packages that provide graphics devices should be reinstalled "Should" in this context really means "must be reinstalled if you want to be able to use the devices provided by these packages". I just tested my local backport of Dirks recent upload to unstable, and confirm that such devices only work after reinstalling the package that provides them. So I believe at least the following packages should be rebuilt in unstable: r-cran-rgl, r-cran-svglite, r-cran-vdiffr which embeds svglite, ggplot2 This list is just what I came up with in May last year when R_GE_version was bumped to 14, I assume that the list is longer than that. Another option (also discussed last year) would be to introduce something like Provides: r-gev-15 to the next prerelease upload of r-base, and add versioned depends to the affected R graphics packages. As I do not provide backports of Graphics packages, I do not have a strong opinion on this. For Michael and the users of his nice PPAs of R packages for Ubuntu, the second option may have the potential to avoid some headaches. Cheers, Johannes ---------- Weitergeleitete Nachricht ---------- Betreff: Accepted r-base 4.1.3.20220324-1 (source) into unstable Datum: Freitag, 25. It's been in r-devel for months as Paul did some nice extensions work there (and described it in posts on the R Core blog at [1]). I am generally in favour of keeping it simple and just suggest reinstallation / rebuilds of graphics packages. I'll aim to update r-base in unstable every four or so days to keep it out of testing. Please test R 4.2.0 now before the actual release in ~ four weeks. Dirk -- dirk.eddelbuettel.com | @eddelbuettel | edd at debian.org
