If you feel secure in exposing your windows box to the internet, then sure
its possible to authenticate. See the shorewall documentation for port
forwarding samba/smb/nmb packets.

Consider implementing a VPN server to access your LAN infrastructure instead
of port forwarding samba/smb/nmb packets.
