I have am interested in using earthlink''s unlimited voice for my telephone service. It provides unlimited phoning throughout the US for $40 a month. It uses a Cisco ATA186 analog to digital converter and plugs into an ethernet router. Since I use SuSE8.1 and Shorewall I am interested in learning if anyone has already tried that particular lashup. Earthlink says all that is required is the ATA and a router to feed it to their cable modem. The ATA specs say it can get the IP from DHCP or a static IP of the 1918 variety. I have done some preliminary looking to see if anyone else has done this with their linux box but so far I havent found anything. Cisco says it is a VOIP setup. Has anyone else done this with their linux box and shorewall? Of course I called Earthlink but this is so new their Tech support could only read the marketing nonsense from their web page. I''m real curious as to how this is all handled through the cable modem. Anybody got any good references??? TIA Richard
That sounds suspiciously like vonage''s service - perhaps they are simply reselling it? I''d try contacting Vonage''s support, to see if they are a little more clueful :) http://www.vonage.com I''m curious about this service too, but hadn''t got as far as pursuing it. I''d be interested to hear how you fare.
