I have run hald on my desktop and laptop with 10.4-REL and 10.4-STABLE for a
long time without issues.
To OP: have you rebuilt kernel modules? You only write that you tried with a
new kernel. I believe that there are internal kernel interfaces that have
changed between 10.3 and 10.4, so it is essential to rebuild all modules.
Likewise, I don't expect "ps" from 10.3 to work on 10.4.
