Flac - Apr 2007 - FLAC: recommended compression

Hi,

Why is -5 the recommended compression for the FLAC encoder? So my question
is: why is a lower compression recommended over a higher compression (-8)?
What factors make -5 the "recommended" one, even if the compression is
lower
then the -8 option?

I hope somebody can explain this

Hi there,

5 is the optimum compression level in terms of encoding speed and
the compression ratio. From my experience, -8 results in flac files
that are <1% smaller than -5, so I usually use -5, it's way faster.
However the recent update has greatly increased the speed of -8.
