  As /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu is a conffile, dpkg won''t remove
  it on upgrades, and it''s the job of the maintainer not to leave it
  around (especially if some other package is to provide it afterwards).
  See Bug#308252 for a sample preinst script that I just wrote dealing
  with a similar issue.

  Still waiting for a word from the GNOME guys, though.
