Hi folks, Still trying to get security = share working, which it appears means I need to install Samba 3. As the server is pretty much goverened by this, I can install whatever linux is required, although I know Fedora, so CentOS etc is possible. I've just tried uninstalling Samba 4 from my F20 laptop to play with Samba 3. Can someone explain to me why to remove Samba I also have to remove 166 dependencies including kwalletmanager, kmail and kdeartwork-screensavers?????
Hi Gary, Samba 3 will not be developed / supported any longer when Samba 4.2 is released (which means soon). Although, If you use RHEL then the Samba 3 will be supported by RH till RHEL 6 reach EOL (at least that's what they say now). I dont know your goal, but can't it be solved with other type of security? Samba 4 support new SMB2 and SMB3 protocols compatible with new windows 7,8 - the file transfer speeds will be badly affected on newer windows client types. As for uninstalling the Samba - just use 'yum' to list packages and then "rpm -e --nodeps". cheers -- *Karel Lang* *Unix/Linux Administration* lang at afd.cz | +420 731 13 40 40 AUFEER DESIGN, s.r.o. | www.aufeerdesign.cz On 01/26/2015 03:14 PM, Gary Stainburn wrote:> Hi folks, > > Still trying to get security = share working, which it appears means I need to > install Samba 3. As the server is pretty much goverened by this, I canYou don't need Samba3.x, 4.x is no different in terms of security levels. Replacement for share level security: security = user map to guest = Bad Password

Unfortunately, it still doesn't work. When I try to connect to the new server using the WinXP and Win7 clients that are using the old server they just fail to connect. I understand that the work-around you quote is how people are getting round the fact that share security doesn't work any more. However, I can't use that method as I need to retain password protection. Gary
