 For a 32-bit kernel, I did.
 For a 64-bit kernel, I didn't but I see no
 reason it should failed. I will try just to be sure.

Unfortunately at the moment I cannot test your finding (probably Gene will).
Now that you are immerse in the topic it would be great if you can test 
as much as you can your patch and also confirm you do not find similar 
inconsistencies when booting 64Bit kernels.

I remember Ady telling me about some kernel booting issues and I wonder if your 
findings could be somehow related.
