Hello! I want to setup exim4 for the use with mailscanner. (I was working with mailscanner for 2 years, but after an update it wrecked my setup...) I am using exim4 4.61-1. Exim4 does work alone and delivers all mails as expected. When I do the following: modify the exim4 defaults in /etc/default/exim4 - set QUEUERUNNER to `separate'' - add to QUEUERUNNEROPTIONS `-DOUTGOING'' - add to SMTPLISTENEROPTIONS `-odq''. as written in the mailscanner docs, exim4 does NOT start any more, and writes nothing in logs...so I cannot search for the errors. How do I enable debugging for "both" the listener/queuerunner? Why is an QUEUERUNNER=''combined'' entry in the init.d script? Should I change this to seperate too? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. cu Joh.

Which is no big surprise.> Why is an QUEUERUNNER=''combined'' entry in the init.d script? That''s a default which is used if /etc/default/exim4 does not exist.> Should I change this to seperate too?Chances of this helping are slim. I won''t support it.Well - MailScanner offers IMO most flexibility concerning what to do when the AV scanner finds malware etc. At our department, we don''t want to miss it. Maybe that other wrappers (e.g. amavis) offer as much flexibility, but MailScanner satisfies our needs.> > When I do the following: > > > > modify the exim4 defaults in /etc/default/exim4 > > - set QUEUERUNNER to `separate'' > > - add to QUEUERUNNEROPTIONS `-DOUTGOING'' > > - add to SMTPLISTENEROPTIONS `-odq''. > > > > as written in the mailscanner docs, exim4 does NOT start any more, and > > writes nothing in logs...so I cannot search for the errors. > > Looks like the mailscanner docs break exim. Which is no big surprise.MailScanner doesn''t break anything. But IMO there is some more work necessary to get it running on Debian. You need two instances of exim which AFAIK makes it necessary to change init scripts, pid handling, create a second spool directory and so on. As this fairly differs from the "stock Debian configuration" of the exim4 package, I recommend creating your own configuration files. The MailScanner docs drop some words on how to configure the two exim instances...
