Disregard my recent plaint - all is well!  Somehow the window for the 
coding category got "lost."  I''m still not sure why the
highlighted coding
didn''t appear in the previous documents - does the window have to be
active
for the highlighting to be visible, even with the category displayed in the 
drop-down at the bottom?

That is strange - the highlighted coding should be visible so long as 
the appropriate category is selected in the drop-down, whether or not 
the window is active. If you can reproduce this please could you send a 
note with further details of your OS and Weft version.
